The Department of Philosophy, Ramananda College, Bishnupur, Bankura has a glorious history in its origin and gradual progress since its inception in the year 1945 in its intermediate course of logic under the Calcutta University. Sri Radhagobinda Roy, the founder Principal of the College was in direct charge of the department as a teacher on the subject.
B.A. pass (now general) course in philosophy was started in the year 1947. In the year 1962 the College came under the university Burdwan on creation of the new University. In the session 2003-04 Honours course in philosophy was started as self-finance basis. At present the department has 45 students in honours course and 1307 students in general course. Last year one student got first class in University final examination.
The relationship between teacher and students is very good both inside as well as outside of the institution. To strengthen the position, the department organizes generally picnic cum excursion every year.
No doubt Philosophy is an interesting subject but now a day it is not recognized as job oriented subject. Naturally students are less interested to choose philosophy as their honours subject. Thus one of the principal objectives of the department is to popularize philosophy. Besides subject teaching the department tries to make students competent for competitive test of various services. The department also provides adequate library facilities. Student can take help central library as well as departmental library.
