The Department of Sanskrit, Ramananda College, Bishnupur, has glorious history in its origin and gradual progress since its inception in 1945. At that time Late Prof. Girija Sankar Ghar, Ishan Scholar (Calcutta University) was the only teacher in the department.
In the beginning (i.e. 1945) only IA classes were started at the residence of Late Ramnalini Chakraborty, a patriot and well-wisher of this college. In the year 1947 the College was shifted to the present place beside the bank of beautiful historic Lalbandh. After that a steady and gradual progress of the college was marked by the new construction of several class rooms, teachers' waiting room, separate waiting room for male and female students, library reading room and separate honours class rooms.
Today, the department has come a long way to have flourished into a leading department of the college, with a departmental Staff Room, four full-time Assistant Professors, four part-time teachers and guest faculties serving the department from time to time. In the year 2017, the department has opened up for Post-Graduate education under the affiliation of Bankura University. This department has produced a good number of brilliant students in the last sixty-four years who have excelled in many spheres of life such as education, administration etc. by successfully competing in competitive examinations arranged by premier Govt. organizations e.g. School Service Commission, Staff Selection Commission, College Service Commission, Public Service Commission, etc.
At present the department is suffering from paucity of full time teachers after the retirement of some teachers. However, the problem has been temporarily solved through the appointment of part time teachers. The college authority in negotiating with West Bengal College Service Commission and the Government of West Bengal to fill the vacancies of the retired teacher.
