           The department was established in 1946 to provide opportunity for higher education in science to the students coming from rural and economically poor background. Introduction of Physics honours course was unique in the sense that till then there was no scope to study the course in this vast hinterland.

                The study of science has always been a demystifying experience. The ability to ask critical questions and follow them up with a systematic plan of inquiry seeking right answers advances scientific thoughts. Scientific approach ignites minds, keeps life interesting and supports the rapid progress man has been making through ages. The quest for knowledge helps understand the basic constructs better and the drive for expeditions and explorations leads to inventions and discoveries. Physics is a branch of science based on experimental observation. The acquaintance with physics helps to realize the working principles of many of our daily appliances. The beauty of physics lies in the simplicity of the fundamental physical theories.

The Department of Physics has three teachers (out of three), having Ph. D. as their highest qualification. The subjects of specialization, in M. Sc., of the teachers are diversified: Solid State Physics, Nuclear Physics and X-Ray & Crystallography. Our motto is to make physics enjoyable to the students. The university syllabus of each academic session has been distributed into three modules to enable the teachers to complete their topics within stipulated period.

The department has got well equipped laboratories and the classrooms have been improved with teaching aids like charts, overhead projector, slide projector and computer. The Departmental Library has a good number of textbooks and reference books. Eminent scientists have participated in different seminars on current topics arranged by our department during the past few years.

The present B.Sc. Course, offered by the University ofBurdwan,is mostly application oriented and more acceptable to the industry. A considerable number of honours graduates from our department opt to study Post Graduate course and then take up research work in different universities and institutes. While some of them go for job-oriented studies like BCA, MCA or MBA, a few of them find placement in Vasavi Steel and other Companies at Industrial growth center, Bishnupur. A good number of students are absorbed as teachers in different schools through the School service Commission.

Ramananda College, Bishnupur, Bankura was established in 1945. Intermediate Science (I. Sc.) classes were started under the Calcutta University from July 1946 and the Department of Physics also came into existence that particular year. Subsequently, B.Sc. course in pure science was started and continued up to 1961.

During 1961--62 sessions, the College came under the jurisdiction of Burdwan University. From 1969-–70 sessions, 3–Year B.Sc. Honours Degree Course in Physics was introduced. In the session 1977–78, H.S (science course) came into existence which has been discontinued since 2000-01. In conformity with the All India pattern prescribed by UGC, the 3 Year General and Honours Degree Course of new format Part–I, Part–II and Part–III was introduced from 1999--2000.

During 2017-18sessions, the College came under the jurisdiction of Bankura University. From 2017-18 sessions, the Degree Course (Hons & Pass) in Physics is being governed by CBCS curriculum distributed in six semesters under the affiliation of Bankura University.

Physics has a profound effect on all scientific developments. It is the present day equivalent to “natural philosophy” from which most of our modern sciences arose. Being a description of nature, physics has been our best friend from the very day of human existence. The basic aim of Physics teaching is to let the students know and understand the principles and their applications in real life.

The Dept. of Physics, from the day of its establishment, has been engaged in imparting knowledge and providing opportunity to the students of this locality. The test of all knowledge is experiment, because experiment is the sole judge of scientific ‘truth’. So a number of new experiments have been set up to make them conversant with the modern scientific development. We endeavour a constant encouragement to the students to take part in different scientific competitions and programmes so that they can establish themselves for higher studies in Physics and allied technological subjects.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS

• 
  Laboratory:

There are 6 spacious laboratories for Honours and General course experiments. The laboratories cover most of the experiments (more than 95%) prescribed in the Honours and General syllabus of Burdwan University.

• Departmental Library:

The departmental library has about 70 books of different branches of Physics. Every Honours student of each year is allowed to take one book twice a week from this departmental library.

• Question Bank:

The department has had a major contribution in framing of model questions released by the University of Burdwan for distribution among the affiliated colleges of this University. In addition, the departmental library also contains model questions, class test, annual examination and University pre-qualifying test papers set by the faculty members. 

• Regular assessment:

All the faculty members take Class tests in regular intervals after completion of a specified part of the syllabus.

• Exhibition with models:An exhibition with models such as Barlow’s wheel, Steam engine, Lenz’s law verification apparatus, apparatus showing pressure exerted by radiation, Discharge phenomenon etc. was held on the occasion of Golden Jubilee celebration of the college in the year 1997. This programme was duly assisted by quiz contest and oral discussion. This programme raised great enthusiasm among the students as well as the general public of this locality.
• Workshop:Department of Physics, Ramananda College hosted the programme “Enjoy the excitements in PHYSICS, Come and learn PHYSICS” during September 6-9, 2006 in association with IAPT-Midnapore College Centre for Scientific Culture as a part of a nation-wide program undertaken by NCSTC-Network and supported by RVPSP, New Delhi for the students of classes XI and XII. The programme was continued from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m on the specified dates. Science Centre, a Midnapore based Voluntary science organization and members of NCSTC-Network, requested us to host the programme at our college. Sixty Students of class XI and XII from five local high schools participated in this programme with thirty undergraduate students from department of Physics, Ramananda College.The participants were provided free lunch, refreshment etc. without any registration fee.

The objective of this programme was to create opportunity among the school students to perform experiments beyond their syllabus by their own. This activity helped them in conceptual development of the subject as well as to find joy in reading and learning Physics under the guidance of trained undergraduate students and supervision of professors of this college, experts of collaborating institute and science center.

• Outreach Programme:Department of Physics in association with IQAC Ramananda College hosted an outreach on April 25, 2019 for the students of classes IX and XI. The programme was continued from 11:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m on the specified date. Tewnty Students of class IX and XI from a local high school participated in this programme with thirty undergraduate students from department of Physics, Ramananda College. The participants were provided free refreshment without any registration fee.

• A visit to Durgapur Alloy and Steel plant during February1974,
• A visit to Saotaldih thermal power plant during February1980,
• A visit to various research laboratories of the institutions: (a) Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata (b) Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata (c) Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata and (d) Bose Institute, Kolkata during 28^th and 29^th February 1996.
• Science Communicators’ Forum, Kolkata, selected 5 students of our college for attending a 5-day orientation programme (from 25^th to 29^th November 2006) in Physics jointly organized by RVPSP, Dept. of Science and Technology, Government of India. The programme was co-sponsored by Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre and Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute. Attending this programme was a unique opportunity for the students to get an exposure and that also helped them to acquire knowledge about the contemporary developments of this branch of science.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

1. Freshers’ Welcome:

Every year, students of 2^nd and 3^rd year Honours of the department arrange Freshers’ Welcome ceremonyto let the 1^st year Honours students introduce themselves and reveal individual dimensions in a friendly atmosphere.This makes the sphere of interaction a healthy one.

The department arranges Picnic occasionally.

1. Farewell:

The department has a tradition to arrange farewell ceremony to wish the teaching and non-teaching members good health and spirit, on the last day of their service in the college. Students and teachers assemble and wholeheartedly express individual wishes.

1. Teachers’ Day Celebration :

Feelings happen to be very wonderful, for each teacher of our department, on this particular day of the year when all the studentsof the department come in different groups, show respect and honour in a very special way, share lighter thoughts, make everybody feel special in their own way.

1. Raksha-Bandhan

This is again one of the most joyful days in our department. The way all the teachers and students interact and share moments together speaks a lot about the strong bonding.

Students and teachers share very close and healthy relationship in this department.  Response of the students in the classes is quite encouraging and interactive. The teachers help the students in and off the classes in their study, according to their requirements. Students and teachers jointly conduct departmental activities like Farewell ceremony, Freshers’ welcome ceremony, Teachers’ Day, Raksha-Bandhan, Excursion and Picnic. The Wall magazine of this department is again a result of the combined effort of the teachers and the students. Teachers occasionally arrange departmental seminars and intra departmental extempore competitions and the students participate in this programmes spontaneously and enthusiastically. This close bond between the students and the teachers creates a congenial atmosphere in this department.

• Although the department has a well-equipped laboratory pertaining to both Honours and General courses, we wish to enrich it further with additional experimental set-ups to demonstrate both fundamental and contemporary aspects of Physics, which will enable our students to delve deep into the subject and redefine their aim in life, motivate themselves to be with Physics in the future. The department has commendable teaching personnel and efforts will be made to run post-graduate course in Physics.

• We have plans to arrange science seminar, model based exhibition, quiz contest in every coming year in collaboration with competent institutions and learned faculty members from different universities and institutes. This will immensely help to promote the students of this locality to understand the basic principles and applications of Physics and make Physics friendly and enjoyable to them. Efforts are on to run short time project to train H.S. students of our locality by hands-on experiments showcasing fundamentals of Physics.
